LEAD

Lead is used in enormous quantities in batteries and as covering of electric wires, tubes, tanks, and in equipment for X-rays. Thanks to its high density and its great captive section, lead is used as a protective substance for radioactive materials.

Numerous alloys that contain a high percentage of lead are utilized in welding, in printing and gearing. A considerable quantity of compounds is also used in paints and pigments.

The principal sources of this metal are to be found in Australia, in the USA, in Canada, Mexico, Peru, Serbia, Montenegro and Russia.

The monoxide (PbO), a yellow crystalline powder formed by heating lead in a current of air, is used to prepare flint glass, as a dryer for oils and paints, and in the production of insecticides.

Red lead or minium (Pb
3O4), a crystalline powder of a red colour, owes its name to the river Minius. in the North West of Spain. Known since the time of the ancient Romans, red lead oxide is formed by alteration of galena. It has been produced industrially for a long time by oxidizing the fused lead by means of a current of air.
